Community Project 2015
Ken & Richard’s arts organisation 4 Corners Music catalysed and programmed more than a year of activity to commemorate the Heaton Pit Disaster of 1815 on its 200th anniversary.

On 3rd May 1815, 75 men and boys died within a few days of the accident but the first body was not recovered until 6th January 1816. Men working in Heaton Main Colliery had broke into the abandoned workings of Heaton Banks Colliery. The influx of water cut off their escape route and the pumping technology of the day was unable to drain the mine before their air supply ran out.
As well as a service of remembrance in St Theresa’s Church above the site of the disaster, choir and community music was composed and performed, films made, artists in residence in Heaton schools completed ambitious installations, lantern processions, snow drop planting, theatre, and a series of related concerts programmed.
